Statement

Carl Jung proposed that outside our individual consciousness there existed an inherited collective unconscious; here, all our instinctual and primal explanations of our world exist in the shape of symbolic archetypes, motifs and metaphor. These archetypes and representations are most notably found within tales, stories, and myth, and are part of our cultural syntax, and colour the way to the way we view femininity.

My final year work explores and attempts to break down this symbology and unite both the beautiful and terrifying imagery that has come to be associated with the female psyche.

Nature is a prevalent symbol that is used recurrently in the work, either as material or subject. A variety of drawing techniques and materials were used to achieve subtle qualities that represent these concept and concerns; as well as incorporating shapes and colour that have associations with the feminine. The outcome of the work is represented through a series of vignettes that collectively represent the dynamic and conflicting portrayals of this universal symbolism.
